Sheer Lunacy

"I am Moon, the Great and Powerful!"
Big sigh. It's always more disturbing to see troubling images than just to imagine them. MediaMatters.org put up an extensive rundown review of Glenn Beck's "Man in the Moon" show and, yeah, it's kind of disturbing. In a separate piece they also put up a whole bunch of pictures from the moonstruck extravaganza. If you had any doubt that Beck is somehow connected to the tea party, unrestricted gun enthusiasts, survivalists, President-haters, fringe elements, etc., those pictures should clear it up for you. It is troubling that this was in Utah. Even more troubling are some pretty clear links to the LDS fringe.

Heavy Sigh
Yep, that's the Cleon Skousen table. There was an unholy connection with this book seller of "interesting" political theories with certain circles of Mormonism back in the 1960s and 70s, the sort of thing the official LDS Church has been trying to separate itself from since the 1970s (as they attempt to do with any political group or movement - probably even passionate moderation).

And the most troubling of all, it's bad enough that my Congressman is hooked up with this Skousenite Beck guy, but another of the featured lecturers (for a fee) was our own Mayor of Munchkin City, the Junior Senator from Utah, Mike Lee!

And, according to MediaMatters, Beck even used the phrase, "There's a sucker born every minute."

P.T. Barnum would be so proud!

Beck's morbid fascination with all things nazi & racist is worse than even I originally gleaned from MediaMatters above. The SL Trib reports today of things so disgusting I don't want to describe them nor would I share any pictures. Beck is no circus-freak show of entertainment value, he is a sick and disturbed individual promoting his political/historical pornography.

  1. After I joined the Church as a teenager, I read some of these books and became an ultra-conservative because I thought it was what Mormons should believe....in spite of the best efforts of good moderate Mormons like you who lovingly tried to reclaim me.
It wasn't until a few years ago that my eyes were opened and I returned to my former moderate political beliefs.

    1. Thanks, Anonymous!

You validate my reason for blogging, etc. I'm not sure I believe all my political views or take them as seriously as some may think I do. They're quite different from my religious beliefs and my core sense of being - although they also relate. I hope people can see that through my postings here and the way I live my life. I read "None Dare Call It Conspiracy" (which has to be one of the greatest self-parody titles of all time) when I was in high school and thought it was kinda cool - but then I immediately forgot it and moved on to other things. It may sound a bit odd, but one of the reasons I am a Democrat is because somebody has to be and I'm willing to offer myself up. I certainly don't think everybody should be and there's the nub of the difference with some who believe their political way is the only true and righteous way just the same as their religious belief.
