Family Totems II

Staring at one of my favorites last night, I realized that my wife had added significant beauty to our home (even beyond her presence). I already shared some of my dad's art here, and there may be more to come. But I ought to share these quilt displays from my wife.

The first is the one that sparked me last night. This is from a pattern she bought in a quilt store in Skagway, Alaska. Skagway is a beautiful town. Well, not the town so much, but its setting. This quilt represents the story from the People of the Northern Pacific Coast how Raven stole the sun to place it in the heavens. We had a beautifully illustrated children's book on this theme that my kids loved.

The next two represent my wife's love of hummingbirds which she got from her mom. My wife did two of them on the left so she could give one to her mom.

And, hanging by our front door is this one, patriotic Americans that we are:

My wife loves quilting in part because of her math and science background. It's all geometry to her. Yet she certainly has a talent for choosing fabric colors to set out and even inspire in these pieces.

And speaking of inspiration, here's a fairly recent one that speaks volumes as to what we value in our family:

Yes, pretty things for a Sunday blog. I get to enjoy them every day.

  1. I have a sister who creates her own quilting patterns, and lots of times she uses her math background as she makes them. I am not very artistic. Most of my talents are in poetry and writing, so I am always in awe of those who can create beautiful art. My friend Tali paints the most beautiful paintings, and I am in awe everytime I look at one of her paintings.
